The cover of the zine. It features a doodle of Peridot with a magnifying glass looking at the venus (female) symbol, the mars (male) symbol, and transgender symbol, on a black background. The title at the top reads 'Human gender: A Gem's perspective'. A small doodle of Peridot in green pen is overlayed on an image of starry space. The green text reads: 'I am an alien. That's obvious enough!' An image of earth with a handrawn green explosion near Delaware, USA. The text reads 'So, when I crash landed on Earth, everything was alien.' A vertically stretched and grey scale photo of a busy street. The text reads 'Especially humans and their norms. One of the most baffling of them all...' Mushroom cloud made of rainbows with the logos for Tumblr, Twitter, Ao3, and youtube with rainbow overlay at the top of the page. The word 'Gender' in a italic red serif font is in the middle of the page. Blurred corn field with a doodle of Peridot and Lapis Lazuli on top. Peridot has a speech bubble with the text 'Hey Lazuli, did you know some people can be 'boy' or 'girl'?' and Lazuli has one that says 'That sounds dumb.' Seperate text reads 'I had never thought about 'identity' before becoming a Crystal Gem. After I had attained internet access, I learned a lot about human identities! I knew Lazuli had a point. But I was simply too enthralled with how this concept plays into the social structure of humanity to ignore it.' The background is a dense, dark motherboard/circuits. A doodle of Peridot with lines pointing to his various features is on top. The title text says 'Actually, on Homeworld, individualism was highly discouraged. You were not really supposed to have 'identity'. List of things that were part of my identity:' Peridot Facet 2F5L Cut 5XG. 'Name, used for identification and nothing else.' (Line pointing to stilt-like leg attachments) 'Limb enhancers, because Era 2.' (Line pointing to forehead Gem) 'Gem placement and color.' (Line pointing to triangular hair) 'Hair shape is one of the few choices you could vaguely alter, but it's mostly decided by your wall hole.' (Line pointing to hand attachments) 'My Gemnet data with my assignments and logs.' (Line pointing to diamond shape on knees) 'Yellow Diamond branding, so Gems know who you 'belong' to.' The text at the bottom reads, 'That's why I found it so interesting how 'genders' are somewhat like 'gem types.' A foggy window with a clear question mark serves as the background. A stereotypical doodle of a pink woman and a blue man are next to this text, 'I learned about how girls are supposed to be frail, dainty, and shaped a certain way and like the color pink and like unicorns and makeup. I learned about how boys are supposed to be strong, emotionless, like the color blue and like violence.' Under the human doodles are doodles of Pearl and Amethyst, next to text that reads 'And I learned about how these rules are, well, just as silly as the rules Gems had to follow. Pearls are supposed to be dainty, but the renegade Pearl loves to fight and she is still very much a Pearl! Amethysts are supposed to be gruff and tall, and Amethyst is very short, but still very much an Amethyst.' 'With my previous knowledge it was quite easy to deconstruct gender. I have played these games before! And now that I understood it, I could use it in my own way.' A Steven Universe style space background with a drawing of Peridot on the left. The top text reads 'After all had settled and Era 3 came into being, I think I had finally figured it out. Perhaps I said something like,' Peridot's eyes are closed and a text bubble reads, 'After deepest consideration, I have decided to 'come out' as boy. Praise me now for my bravery.' The bottom text reads, 'Or something to that affect.' Text is overlayed on a photo of a flower field. 'Back then, I mostly did it for fun. 'Gender'. Now, I have been conditioned to see it seriously, in this human body and human world. Even so, I still barely consider myself 'trans' gender. Firstly, I am a Gem, I am a Gem with gender on top! What makes a 'boy' any different from a 'girl' is still a question that grips us all. But, in the end, I think there's little reason trying to find these differences. And I hope one day, humans can find a healthy balance between participating in comfortable roles, and pushing the boundaries of their boxes!' Text on top of a black background reads: 'After all, there are so many different ways...' 'To be a Peridot, to be a Quartz, to be a Diamond, to be a boy, to be a girl, to be a person! Final verdict: Identity is pretty fun!' (After all 'To be a' statements, there are a few doodles showing different body types. At the last one, there are doodles of everything ranging from clouds to bugs to people with tails.'
